Stop That! (an open admonishment to Sen. John Kerry)

Stop it right now! Having learned nothing from the last campaign, which surprises me given the amount of postgame analysis that has been done, Senator John Kerry is apparently "thinking hard" about running again. I have no problem with him running again. I'm not wild about it either, but the notion of a second attempt is not what bothers me.

"I will make that decision toward the end of the year, but I'm thinking about it hard," Kerry said in response to a question at the Latin Economic Forum at the United Nations.

Mr. Kerry, if you want to run again, that's great but, for the love of all that is holy, STOP THINKING ABOUT IT! Or, at the very least, if you're going to think about it, don't tell anyone. Just think about it, reach a decision, and announce it. That's it.

Well, you say, perhaps Americans are ready for a president who thinks about things. Yes, yes we are. But anyone who would consider voting for you (and many who never would) already know that you're a thinker. You don't need to make that point. Moreover, in case the headline didn't tip you off, the press likes to write about your more pensive side. I follow these things, and I haven't seen your name in the news once in the past three months. I'm sure you've held various positions, given speeches, attended rallies, and perhaps even voted on a few bills. None of that makes the news. If you want to pull it off this time, you're going to have to make sure the words "think," "John Kerry," and "president" don't appear in the same sentence--at least not yet.
